Abbott set to lead Polar Bears again

Served as coach from 2005-09

FAIRMONT — J.L. Abbott is ready to step back into a familiar place.

Fairmont Senior’s football coach for five seasons, Abbott has been recommended by the Marion County superintendent to take over that position once again, per the board of education agenda on Monday night.

Abbott coached the Polar Bears from 2005-09, compiling a 37-20 career record and making the state playoffs four times. In his most recent season in charge of FSHS football, in 2009, Abbott led the program to a 10-2 record and boasted three Class AAA first-team all-state players. Before that, he coached the 2006 Kennedy Award winner in quarterback Kyle Allard.

In February 2010, he left the Polar Bears to coach the offensive line at Fairmont State University under then-head coach Mike Lopez. Since then, Abbott has also served as assistant for Fairmont Senior girls’ soccer and currently boys’ basketball.

In 2005, Abbott took over a program that hadn’t reached the playoffs in five years. He made the Polar Bears a playoff team in his first season and followed that up with a berth in the state semifinals in 2006, another postseason spot in 2008 and a quarterfinal appearance in 2009.
