Following the 2013 state wrestling championship, each team in the county can say it has a champion.
East Fairmont High School claimed two in Garrett Onderko at 182 and Jesse Roman at 195. For North Marion High School, Ryan Elliott was crowned at 120, and for Fairmont Senior High School, Anthony Alvaro won at 145.
“It was a good day for Marion County,” East Fairmont head coach John Geary said following the state championship matches Saturday evening. “Alvaro won. Of course, Elliott, Onderko and Roman all won as well. We haven’t had that many people win in one county for a while.”
The last time four people in the county brought home titles was in 2008, when Mason Bailey, Drew Jenkins, Hunter Wood and Eric Morris each brought home titles.
But the crazy thing about this season is there were other wrestlers who had a shot of winning the title and fell just a bit short.
Colin Masters of Fairmont Senior, East’s Logan Bowman and North’s Tyler Arnett all tallied second-place positions.
Bowman’s match was a tight one from the beginning.
“Bowman took a shot right at the end of the first period and he didn’t get it,” Geary said. “Isaiah (Holyfield of Robert C. Byrd High School) scored right at the end of the first period. Logan rode him out the whole second period. It took him about four seconds to get out in the third. He pushed and pushed to try to get that point and he came up just a little bit short at the end.”
The loss was by one point, 2-1.
Even though Bowman came just a bit short in the finals, he plowed past his other competition. He finished his senior season with a 48-7 record.
