FAIRMONT —
Even after his team being dealt its first loss of District 5 tournament play, Fairmont 11-12-year-old All-Star baseball manager Steve Moroose had his head held high.
The same goes for his players, too.
That’s how it usually works when you lose the first in a double-elimination format, as Fairmont fell to Shinnston, 9-5, on Thursday night at Mary Lou Retton Park.
Tomorrow is another day — and another game.
“We're still alive and the goal is still in front of us. We still have a lot of baseball left,” Moroose said of his team, which finished pool play unbeaten and is now 3-1 in the tournament.
The next game on the docket for Fairmont is today, as it takes on Upshur County in a loser’s bracket contest at 5:30 p.m. at the new Bridgeport Recreation Complex. If the team wins, they’ll play the loser of today’s Bridgeport-Shinnston tilt in the loser’s bracket title game at 2 p.m. at the same venue.
Both the winner’s bracket and loser’s bracket champions will advance to the West Virginia State Little League Tournament in Martinsburg later this month.
On Thursday, Nicky Moroose again powered Fairmont. The slugger bashed a three-run home run, his third in as many days, and Dante Stills added a solo shot as Fairmont led 5-4 by the time the fifth inning rolled around.
It was all Shinnston from that point on, though, as the team rallied for three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take control.
Vince Sabatino added a double for Fairmont in the loss.
