While the goal is always to win, Fairmont Senior’s boys’ soccer team entered its 2012 season opener with a little perspective, too.
The Polar Bears were hosting Parkersburg without several starters, plus they graduated a few others. Add the fact they’re now a Class AA program and facing someone higher up on the food chain, and this now becomes more of a litmus test than must-win game.
And while Fairmont Senior didn’t earn victory on Friday at East-West Stadium, falling 2-1 to the Big Reds, the team got something out of it.
“I was very pleased with our performance,” longtime Fairmont Senior coach Jim DeNardi said. “They played hard and did the kind of things we needed to do.”
“I think we played really well. We have to play like we’re playing them every game,” Polar Bears’ senior goalie Matt Bartrug said.
