North Marion’s girls’ basketball team kept its recent hot streak going, bumping its winning streak to nine games with a 72-41 rout of visiting Lewis County on Wednesday night.
The Huskies, now 14-4 and 9-3 in Big 10 play, actually trailed in this one to start.
They were down 13-11 after the first period, but used two runs to take command — a 18-4 surge to close the opening half and a 31-12 flurry in the third.
“In the first half, we didn’t make shots and in the second half we did and that got us on a run,” North coach Mike Parrish said of his team, which last lost Jan. 11 at home versus No. 1 Bridgeport.
A big key to the run was a lot of scoring. In third alone, the Huskies got 12 points apiece from both Noca Singleton and Megan Haller.
“When you get four or five girls clicking at the same time, it makes it a lot easier,” Parrish said.
In all, 10 Huskies found the net on Wednesday.
Haller led the way with 17, while Singleton added 14 and Anna Moscufo chipped in 10.
Audia Bartlett added eight points; Cara Egress, Mackensy Hess and Andrea Nicholas each had five; Chelsea Swiger and Shasta Pyles both had three; and Taylor Wells had two.
North look to keep its winnings ways going on Friday at 6 p.m. at home against Oak Glen. The varsity-only game will also be Senior Night for the Huskies.
Also on Thursday, the North Marion junior varsity girls’ basketball team capped a perfect 16-0 season with a win over Lewis County.
This Huskies’ team is believed to be the first junior varsity sqaud in NMHS history — boys or girls — to finish undefeated.
Brittany Rhoades led North with 19 points.
Shasta Pyles had 11 points; Taylor Wells 10; and Claudia Sheets and Andrea Nicholas each had nine.
“We had some good teams that finished with one loss, but this is the first we know of that was undefeated,” Parrish said. “It’s a good group of kids and they work hard and put in a lot of time over the summer. It’s good to be able to have the varsity team like we have and have a good jay vee team, too.”
Polar Bears upend Preston
Playing a rare game at the Woody Williams Armory on Wednesday, Fairmont Senior’s girls’ basketball team made the most of it with a 51-38 win over Preston.
Kelsy Morrone paced a solid all-round team effort with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jasmine Johnson also notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and added five steals.
Emily Stoller added 10 points for the winners; Gabby Tenney had nine points and six rebounds; and Jenny Bundy had six points and five assists.
The Bears trailed 21-15 at halftime, but allowed just eight points in the second period and cut that number to six in the third.
“We got a little better every quarter defensively,” FSHS coach Corey Hines said of his team, which held a 19-11 scoring edge in the fourth.
Fairmont Senior (15-5) hosts Lewis County on Friday on Senior Night. An upcoming home game with Class AAA Morgantown won’t be played.
Also, the FSHS junior varsity team improved to 12-3 with a 40-35 win over Lewis County on Wednesday.
Devin Reigal had 12 points for the Bears, while Taylin Dobbs had nine points and 13 rebounds and Ali Shaver had seven points.
