North Marion’s girls’ basketball team used some timely defense — and more than a few shots from long range — on Wednesday night to notch a 74-33 victory over visiting Elkins.
The Huskies, who improved to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in Big 10 play, connected on a season-best 13 3-pointers.
“Shots were falling,” North coach Mike Parrish said. “We didn’t hit a bunch in a row but at different times people stepped up and hit shots. We also moved the ball better in the second half.”
After the break is when North fully took command. The Huskies led just 12-9 at the end of one and 34-20 at the half, but broke things open in the third period by outscoring the Tigers 25-7 in the frame.
Parrish highlighted his team’s defense for the third-quarter surge.
“The defense wasn’t putting a lot of pressure on (in the first half) and in third quarter we played defense like we’re supposed to,” he said.
Anna Moscufo led North Marion with 18 points. Three others — Audia Bartlett (15 points), Megan Haller (11) and Noca Singleton (10) — also scored in double digits.
Chelsea Swiger added six points, while Cassady Rodriguez and Andrea Nicholas each had three in the win, the Huskies’ third straight.
Bartlett and Haller both nailed three 3-pointers, and Moscufo and Swiger each added two treys apiece.
North visits Buckhannon-Upshur on Friday.
Bees slip past
Philip Barbour
PHILIPPI — East Fairmont’s girls’ basketball used some late-game foul shooting en route to a 56-55 win over Philip Barbour on Wednesday.
The Bees hit 13 of 20 from the line overall, including 5 of 8 in the fourth period, and saved the biggest one in the game’s final 10 seconds.
Up three, East’s Catherine Boyles hit one of two free throws for a four-point lead. That would be just enough cushion to preserve a Bees’ win, despite Philip Barbour hitting a 3-pointer before the buzzer to set the final.
“It was just one of those ball games but we won it on the foul line,” East coach Bill Malone said. “None was any bigger than than (Boyles’ shot) at the end. Under those conditions, that was a big shot for us to make but everyone’s foul shot made a difference.”
Boyles led the Bees with 16 points, while Peyton Ryan had 13 and Brooklynn Weaver added 12.
Melissa Meluzio had a team-best six rebounds for East, and Boyles and Felicity VanGilder each pulled down five boards.
"Everyone contribued in this one tonight,” Malone said. “I’m just happy for the girls to pick up a win.”
East (5-10) hosts Lincoln on Friday for Senior Night.
