Fairmont Senior’s stretched its winning streak to four on Thursday with a 62-42 road victory over Buckhannon-Upshur.
The Polar Bears, now 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the Big 10, are 7-1 after starting the year with two losses in a row.
On Thursday, Fairmont Senior had little trouble with the host Bucs. They led 14-4 after one period, eventually bumped the lead to 53-29 after three and never trailed in the contest.
Devante’ Waites paced the Polar Bears with 19 points. Travon Horton (13 points) and Shaquille Washington (10) also hit double figures in the win.
Fairmont Senior, ninth in the AP Class AA state rankings, played without star point guard Jarin Hilson after the junior suffered an injury against Elkins earlier in the week. He’s expected to be ready for Tuesday’s showdown at No. 4 Robert C. Byrd.
Dalton Westfall led Buckhannon-Upshur (1-11) with 20 points.
Huskies fall to Indians
BRIDGEPORT — A hot start by Bridgeport’s Tyler Sprouse essentially put North Marion on ice Thursday night.
The senior guard scored 24 first-half points to help the Indians roll to a 60-42 home victory.
In all, Sprouse finished with 26 points. He scored 15 of his team’s 17 first-quarter points and had all but seven on Bridgeport’s points at the half as it built a 31-24 lead.
In the third, the Indians (4-4) scored eight points but North netted just four and trailed 39-28 going into the final period.
“He got loose on a couple threes and we went to some box and one (to try to stop him),” North coach Chris Freeman said of Sprouse. “We held him in the second half but by then most of the damage was done.”
Matt Cain was the Huskies’ lone double-digit scorer with 14 points and Chase Banker had eight.
North (5-4 overall, 1-3 in Big 10), No. 9 in this week’s AP poll, played without guard Cameron Wilson. The team was also without center Cody Opron for much of Thursday’s game after he rolled an ankle early in the third period.
North visits Liberty on Tuesday.
Bees fall at Elkins, 59-47
ELKINS — East Fairmont’s saw its two-game winning streak come to an end Thursday with a 59-47 loss at Elkins on Thursday.
The Bee trailed early in this one. They were down 20-9 after a period, and saw the deficit swell to 29-17 by halftime and 46-31 after three.
“I thought they outplayed us and showed even more heart,” East coach Tyrone Asterino said. “We didn’t give up, but they played harder than we did. There’s things we need to work on. I guess we’ll see what happens on Saturday (against Oak Glen).”
East, now 4-4 and 3-2 in the league, got 13 points apiece from John Manchin and Myles Johnson. John Bowman added 11.
Tyler Shreve had 16 for Elkins (8-2).
East hosts Oak Glen on Saturday.
