FAIRMONT —
Fairmont State University was picked to finish fifth in the WVIAC preseason football poll released Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons, who had a breakthrough 7-4 season (4-4 in league play) under Mike Lopez in 2011, tallied 46 points, one more than No. 6-ranked Glenville State.
FSU received two second-place votes by the conference’s coaches.
The Falcons return WVIAC Offensive Freshman of the Year in running back Daniel Monroe. FSU also returns first-team all-conference selection Chris Barfield, along with all-conference performers Dewey McDonald and Garrett Davis. All-American Matt Wilmer averaged 35.1 yards per kickoff return and 23 yards per punt return, and Ryland Newman picked up all-conference honors at cornerback last year.
Shepherd is the favorite to win the league, finishing first in the poll with six first-place nods and 76 points from the votes. The Rams, 9-2 last season, are looking for their sixth WVIAC title since 2004.
Defending champ Concord got the other three first-place votes and 71 points, good for second place in the poll.
West Virginian Wesleyan (third place, 55 points); Charleston (fourth, 50 points); West Liberty (seventh, 31); Seton Hill (eighth, 16); and West Virginia State (ninth, 15) round out the poll.
