FAIRMONT —
The stands at East-West Stadium tonight will be filled with many colors.
You’ll see the usual blue and gold of all East Fairmont football games. There will be orange and black for Elkins, too, the Bees’ opponent for the evening, but no matter what team’s sideline you’re on or what section you are in, chances are you will be in a sea of pink.
In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a “Pink-Out” has been organized in which all fans are urged to wear pink to tonight’s game, and both teams are on board. Over the past few years, pink has been designated as the official color of breast cancer awareness and can be seen everywhere from food packages to the uniforms of NFL football players.
Chances are anyone reading this article has been effected in some way or another by breast cancer. According to the National Cancer Society, nearly one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.
Michael McCutchan’s family is no exception — his mother, aunt and great-grandmother were all at one time diagnosed with breast cancer. He has had other family members battle other forms of cancer. McCutchan, a senior football player for the Bees, wanted to do something to spread awareness and give back to his community.
“Fighting breast cancer and just fighting cancer in general is an amazing feeling,” he said.
