Quest for perfection

East Fairmont’s Roman hopes to carry momentum into state tourney

FAIRMONT — Being undefeated in wrestling is one of the most difficult feats to accomplish.

Most wrestlers hope to be the best, but for East Fairmont’s senior 195-pound sensation Jesse Roman, it’s an expectation.

“I was the top seed in the Winner’s Choice Tournament. ... I knew everyone that I had beaten below me. I got the win in the finals, but I wasn’t expecting that hard of a match from him. So I would like to congratulate him, too,” Roman said.

The competitor he’s talking about is Hyndman High School and Pennsylvania’s top wrestler in the 195-pound division, Jake Bennett.

Roman is now 41-0 in the regular season, with the majority of the season behind him.

Even though he is undefeated, his performance in the Winner’s Choice put all the naysayers on the back burner.

Prior to the match, Roman pinned every opponent he faced in the tournament. The list includes a top-five wrestler in West Virginia, Terrance Fanning of Preston.

“Jesse really stepped up and he wrestled good,” East Fairmont head coach John Geary said. “Nolte is the only guy he didn’t pin. I think he pinned everybody else, including the Fanning boy from Preston.”

The 5-10, 195-pound athlete isn’t just good at what he does. Roman combines his athletic ability with hard work, and that creates a monster on the mat.

Roman’s training regiment? He runs, lifts, eats healthy, runs some more, eats healthy and then it’s finally time for bed.

“Twice a week, I’ll get up before school and go for a run, then throughout the day, I eat right — not a lot of junk,” Roman said. “After that, I just head to practice and work for 2 1/2 hours straight as hard as I can and as fast as I can.
