Is Moore going to WVU?

In less than two months, Fairmont State will be back on the gridiron again, hoping to record a second straight winning season. Most Falcon fans are aware that quarterback Logan Moore decided to leave the Falcons’ nest and go elsewhere, leaving the Falcon quarterback post up for grabs.

It’s somewhat of a surprise where Logan is going but we surmise he believes that if he’s ever going to make this change, now is the time to do it. We have been told he is transferring to WVU and hopes to play some quarterback for the Mountaineers in the 2013 season.

Geno Smith’s career is over following the upcoming season but coach Dana Holgorsen has recruited some outstanding talent for seasons ahead. So it will be interesting to see how things play out. We had kind of figured that Logan might be headed to California, Pa., where Shannon Kelley departed for last year. But now Shannon is in Houston and has exited this part of the country. We wish him luck.

Looking ahead to the Fairmont State season, the Fighting Falcons will be visiting Clarion on Aug. 30, Glenville on Sept. 6 and Bowie State of Maryland on Sept. 15. Their first home appearance will be at Duvall-Rosier Field on Sept. 22. West Liberty has been one of the top teams in the league the past several years. ...

Pittsburgh Pirate fans haven’t been this excited about the All-Star game in 20 years. The Pirates have two players in Kansas City awaiting tonight’s game and Andrew McCutchen was in last night’s home run hitting contest.

But the best thing about it all is the Bucs are in first place in the National League East and are showing every intention of remaining there. True, their lead over second-place Cincinnati in that division is only 1 1/2 games. But with the determination the Pirates have been playing with over the past two months, we see them adding to that lead. The Pirates play no less than their next 19 games against teams with under .500 records. ...

Ted Potter Jr. was the winner of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic on Sunday and we would guess that many fans were disappointed. Not disappointed that Potter won the tournament but disappointed that Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson did not win it. Neither of them even made the cut. Both golfers have said they would be back in next year’s tournament field, though, and one of these years, a “name” golfer will come through with a big victory at The Greenbrier. ...

New Times West Virginian sports reporter Jarrod Harris learned firsthand last week what a fine young man David Carpenter is when he interviewed the Houston Astros relief pitcher at PNC Park. He and Tammy Shriver were both impressed with the young pitcher and Jarrod was surprised to learn that Tammy has known him for a number of years. Jarrod is the first Marion County native to play in the major leagues since Sad Sam Jones back in the 1950s. And we still do not know where Sad Sam went to high school. ...

Jess Ferrell of Fairmont State posted scores of 80 and 74 in The Greenbrier Classic but that wasn’t so bad. Most golfers today would settle for those two rounds. ...

East Fairmont Rockets football cheerleading final signup will be Sunday, July 15, from 1-3 p.m. at East Fairmont Junior High. The Rockets are members of the Mountaineer Youth Football League.
