West Virginia University’s defensive woes didn’t end with the final gun in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Over the weekend, a pair of safeties, one of them the top defender from a year ago, were arrested.
Karl Myrthell Joseph, 19, of Orlando, Fla., was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with a misdemeanor charge of DUI under 21 and of possessing a false ID.
That came after Travis Elleston Bell, 21, of Hayden Lane, Morgantown, was freed on $7,400 bond Sunday evening following his arraignment on charges of misdemeanor domestic battery, first offense.
“I have been made aware of the situation and I am gathering facts at this time. I will take appropriate action when all the facts are in,” WVU football coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement.
According to the Dominion Post, Joseph was stopped by Officer M.K. Poremba of the Morgantown Police Department after being spotted driving on Beechurst Avenue with his lights out.
Poremba reported Joseph had glassy, bloodshot eyes and alcohol on his breath. He was also wearing a nightclub wristband.
Poremba said he spotted another Florida license in Joseph’s wallet, behind his own, belonging to teammate Isaiah Bruce from Jacksonville, Fla. Bruce is over 21.
According to the report, Joseph admitted to having a few mixed drinks and some champagne. He failed two field sobriety tests at the scene.
An intoxication test ot the state indicated Joseph’s blood-alcohol count at .054. .02 is the minimum required for misdemeanor DUI under 21, according to the Morgantown city code.
A first-offense conviction of misdemeanor DUI under 21 carries a fine of $25 to $100. Possession of a false ID carries a fine of up to $500.
Joseph led WVU with 104 tackles last season with three forced fumbles and two interceptions.
According to State Trooper P.J. Maidens, officers of the West Virginia State Police were called to the Hayden Lane address at 4:30 p.m. on a domestic violence call. The victim reported she had been struck multiple times, thrown to the ground and been tossed around by her hair.
Bell is not to return to the address and must be hooked up with a home confinement electronic monitor within three days, according to a bail order issued by Magistrate Sandy Holepit.
Bell played in only three games last year due to injury but is expected to play a larger role in this year’s defense.
