Last year, the East Fairmont girls’ basketball team went 9-13 and lost a handful of seniors who contributed drastically throughout the tenure of the season.
Players like Caitlin Fluharty, who averaged 13.6 points per game, tallied 174 rebounds, blocked 18 shots and shot 71.2 percent from the free throw line; Allison Fansler, who snatched 98 rebounds and 30 assists; Cali Fluharty, who averaged 7 points a game and provided 96 rebounds and 40 assists; and Sarah Lehman, who notched 88 boards, were key contributers.
The lone returning star from the group is sophomore Brooklyn Weaver, and a pair of seniors in Catherine Boyles and Melissa Meluzio.
“I look for everybody to have a good year this year,” said East Fairmont head coach Bill Malone. “We have two seniors coming back — Catherine Boyles and Melissa Meluzio. They are returning. Those are the two seniors on our team, and then we’re down to a pair of juniors and the rest are sophomores and freshmen.”
Over the weekend, East had its first game of the season against Elkins, and noticed that the team is implementing the various drills Malone has focused on during the fall training sessions.
They found ways to score while playing strong defense. EFHS won that matchup, 43-31, moving to 1-0 on the season.
“In the game the other night, we did some things that we spent our time working on,” Malone said. “That’s what I’m talking about — the defensive things that we were trying to do and the offensive things. Those types of things I’ve noticed in practice and how they’ve carried over. It’s just a matter of us being patient. Things will take care of themselves if they work hard.”
During practice, EFHS spends a lot of time shooting and working on footwork while trying to break down fundamentals.
