Polar Bear bash

Fairmont Senior rolls past Westside, 78-57

FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior ignites its offense in huge win over Westside on Friday evening at the Woody Williams Armory, 78-57.

Although the roads were icy and the snow was falling, the Polar Bears brought their A-game.

The route began right out of the gates when Fairmont’s Austin Norman had a hot hand while swishing three 3s in a blink of an eye.

“It started from the defense — we were able to push the ball up and we kicked it out and found the open guy and Austin certainly hit some big shots,” Fairmont Senior’s head coach David Retton stated. “He was open and knocked some shots open and that opened some things up for us and other guys driving the ball in the lane. It was a team focus that got us to that point that got us to that point of finding open guys.”

Fairmont’s Travon Horton adds, “We moved the ball around and got it othe the open players. We did that with Austin Norman in the first half. He hit a bunch of threes in the first quarter, so it’s just moving the ball around and playing unselfish as a team and that’s what we did today.”

Fairmont wasn’t just scoring in bunches, but its defense allowed for multiple shot opportunities from Shaquille Washington who was scarfing up the boards.

Rebounds equal more shot opportunities and less opportunity for the opposing team to score.

“I thought we really pressured the ball well tonight,” Retton said. “I thought we did a good job tonight by keeping guys in front of us and for the most part, our guys did a solid job of that tonight. That led to our transition.”
