FAIRMONT —
Fairmont State’s Mike Lopez isn’t about looking back.
And in that vein, he’s like every other head football coach on the planet. The kind of folks who take things one game at a time, who want players to learn from mistakes and who feel last year has little bearing on what happens this time around.
“You can never compare years; anybody in this business will tell you that,” he said at the Falcons’ media day last week. “None of that matters. You can’t transfer wins. You can’t transfer people necessarily. They’ve got to get their mindset ready for a new year and a new beginning.”
But at the same time, a small part of him can’t help but wonder, “What if?”
That’s what happens when you lose two games by a combined 13 points — a 36-30 overtime defeat to Glenville State in mid-September, and a 21-14 setback at West Virginia Wesleyan — in what otherwise was a wildly successful 7-4 season.
