FAIRMONT —
For many young and talented high school athletes, it’s very tough to decide what sport to play in college.
Most of the time, the athlete goes to a school in which they were given the most amount of money. The story stands true for Fairmont Senior standout Trevor Malnick.
Malnick was an All-State football and baseball player and he was also awarded player of the year in both sports. When August arrived, and Legion baseball was finished, it was time for Malnick to sit down and decided what’s truly best for his future.
He had two options, play baseball at Potomac State College of West Virginia University or lace up the cleats and put the pads on at Fairmont State.
Malnick decided to take his hometown Falcons over the Catamounts.
“Fairmont State gave me the best offer to come to college,” said Malnick. “Everything was free and paid for, so that’s very hard to turn down.”
Since Malnick was being recruited heavily by Potomac State, West Virginia Wesleyan and West Virginia Tech, it was a tough choice to throw away his lifelong love of baseball.
“It was a tough decision for me because I really didn’t want to give up baseball, but it’s a choice that I had to make,” Malnick said.
