Bears win Big 10 wrestling title

LEWIS COUNTY — The Bears are Big 10 champs.

Sitting in third place when the weather-stricken conference tournament began Wednesday night at Lewis County High School, Fairmont Senior wrestling rallied on the event’s final day to take the league team title.

The Polar Bears had eight semifinals, put a difference-making six in the finals and notched a pair of individual champs in Colin Masters at 106 pounds, Anthony Alvaro at 145 and Vincent Delligatti at 220.

In all, FSHS piled up 205 team points. North Marion was second overall at 180 and East took third with 174.

The Huskies’ champs included 120-pounder Ryan Elliott and Austin Stanley at 132. It marked Stanley’s second straight league crowd, while Elliott withstood a takedown in the finals to bump his season record to a flawless 43-0.

All told, North had 12 placewinners out of 14 weight classes finish in the top six.

“We thought we had a run at East side and Fairmont Senior kind of took control,” North coach Dave Tennant said. “We just couldn’t catch up with them.”

East had a pair of champs in Jesse Roman at 195 and Dalton Michael at 138. Roman kept his undefeated run going, while Michael nabbed another win over Fairmont Senior’s Brent Wyne — just like in last week’s winning match in the East-West dual — to claim victory.

Brody Nesselrotte (126) and Logan Bowman (285) fell in the finals for East. Wyne, Michael Parker (160) and Denzel Pitts each (182) took second for FSHS.

Look for more details from the tournament in Saturday’s edition.
