Barrett leaves lasting legacy

FAIRMONT — It was the mid-1940s, and the high school news being published in The Fairmont Times was absolutely amazing.

This was the time when Fairmont Senior running back Bill Leskovar’s eligibility was in question. Because he had played as an eighth-grader attending Miller Junior High School, several Big 10 schools did not wish to play Fairmont Senior High.

It would be easy to have said that because Leskovar showed extreme talent for a high school sophomore or junior, Victory High and one or two other schools had no intention of playing against the Polar Bears.

But as we remember reading of the incident, they used his playing while still a student at Miller as an excuse.

And the stories coming out of the meetings being held were many.

Who is the young man publishing all this copy about Fairmont Senior High School’s football team?

It was none other than Edgar O. Barrett, better known as Eddie, turning out all this copy for the Family Journal each day.
