WHEELING —
While the end result wasn’t a title, Fairmont Senior’s golf team made its presence known after a one-year hiatus at the state golf championships.
The Polar Bears finished third in Class AA after wrapping up the second and final day of state tournament play on Wednesday at the Trent Jones course at Oglebay Resort.
Fairmont improved seven strokes from its day one team score, totaling 249 over 18 holes Wednesday.
“It was great,” Fairmont Senior coach Luke Corley said. “It was a great season — we came out, worked hard and finished third in the state. It’s a great accomplishment.
The team also had two golfers earn all-state honors, as Nick Sinclair took fourth in Class AA with a two-day score of 159 and Sterling Fitzwater was sixth at 161. The top eight finishers in each classification earn all-state honors.
Sinclair shot a first-day 81 but followed that up with a 78 on Wednesday. Fitzwater fired an 80 and 81, respectively.
“He got all-state honors and he really deserved it. He did what he had to do today,” Corley said of Sinclair. “He’ll be missed; he was a senior captain and a great leader.”
The county’s other state qualifier, North Marion’s Cameron Wilson, finished 12th overall in Class AA. He shot a first-round 81 to vault into contention and then followed that up with an 85 on Wednesday.
“He really turned it on toward the end of the season and carried us,” Corley said of Fitzwater. “To get him back next season is a great thing.”
Sinclair finished just three strokes behind state champ Alston Spears of Roane County, who fired a two-day total of 156. Runner-up Evan Smith of Bluefield was a stroke behind at 157, and Poca’s Travis Covert had a 158.
Other team champs included University in Class AAA (two-day total of 453) and Charleston Catholic in Class A (481).
Wheeling Park fell short of its third straight team crown, taking second behind the Hawks at 459. UHS had three players finish in the top six.
The Patriots’ Cole Hand won the Class AAA individual title with a two-over-par 146. Teammate Thadd Obecny, who was vying for his third championship in a row, was two strokes back at 148.
Buffalo’s Cory Hoshor won the Class A title with a two-day tally of 154.

Musgrave may be rested against OSU
It’s been a fun ride for West Virginia University baseball this season, coming out of nowhere to reach the final weekend with a chance to win the regular-season Big 12 championship.
But coach Randy Mazey is not allowing the Mountaineers to get carried away with that thought. -
HERTZEL COLUMN: WVU Tier 3 bidding goals are ambitious
They are re-opening the bidding at West Virginia University’s athletic department for Tier 3 media rights, but judging by the vision they have shown in putting it together, this is becoming something as ambitious, if not profitable, as the national television deals in which they have a stake.
