Huskies go into finale with good vibes

FAIRMONT — There’s little changing what the standings say, especially with one game left in the season, but North Marion football coach Daran Hays doesn’t consider his Huskies the typical 1-8 squad.

“We’ve laid a couple eggs,” Hays said Friday after North blanked Lincoln, 21-0, for its long-awaited first win. “I told our seniors if we do things and we take care of business next week, I think we’re going to sit back and say we could have easily won six ball games.”

Six wins? From a Husky team that hadn’t held a lead for more than a month until the Lincoln contest? A team that’s given up 37 points per game, including 56 in the first half alone versus Robert C. Byrd?

Crazy as it may seem to some, Hays says yes.

In Week 2, North led Fairmont Senior 10-6 at the half and then allowed 20 unanswered points. A bad start tripped the Huskies up against Preston and a poor second half sunk them at Buckhannon-Upshur. Against East Fairmont, they couldn’t finish a furious rally and the refrain continued until they finally put it all together in Shinnston.

Next up is Senior Night on Friday against 2-6 Grafton and NMHS graduate Mark Yoho, and a second straight game in which the Huskies feel they have a legitimate, honest-to-goodness shot of winning.

“It’s been a season of what ifs, regardless of what happens next week, but I think it’s absolutely vital that we send our seniors out with a win,” Hays said. “We have an opportunity to win a Senior Night game. We haven’t had that opportunity with Bridgeport there the last three years.”
