Rivalry game

FSHS golf defeats North by 2 strokes, 151-153

EVERSON — There is nothing better than a little Fairmont Senior-North Marion rivalry.

On Tuesday, Fairmont Senior golf drew first blood against North Marion, winning by two strokes, 151-153, at Green Hills Country Club.

Placing third in the Big 10 showdown was Bridgeport, with a score of 159. Robert C. Byrd was fourth at 175.

During North Marion’s senior day, the Polar Bears strung together good matches from their top four golfers, which in the end, carried them to victory lane.

“Today’s win was definitely a team effort,” said Fairmont Senior head coach Luke Corley. “We pulled from the bottom. Nick (Sinclair) came out and he shot a 36, and Sterling Fitzwater shot a 38, but the real thing that helped us was Gage Hannah coming in with a 40 and Bailey Mohr coming in with a 37. That 37 was huge. Without that 37 we wouldn’t have won. Sterling and Nick are always going to be battling for medalist; it’s always what happens down the line that determines who wins.”

Yes, Sinclair won the medalist on the day, but his

fifth medalist award of the season was shared due to North’s Austin Swiger and Bridgeport’s Brent Rhodes, who both shot a 36 on the day, leaving the field wide open for any team to slip in and win.

Sinclair earned medalist honors on Monday.
