Clyde Howard Bates, 68, of St. Marys and formerly of Fairmont, died Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2013) at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Clyde was born Dec. 14, 1944, in St. Louis, a son of the late Charles and Janie Pauline Bates of Wallace.
A graduate of Fairmont State College, he was employed as a results technician at the Harrison Power Plant for 30 years.
Clyde was interested in motorcycling and taught motorcycle safety classes in Fairmont for a number of years. A master marksman, he enjoyed shooting, traveling and spending time at the beach.
Clyde is survived by his two children, Abra Lee Bates of Cincinnati and Jack Connor Bates of Fairmont, and his former wife, Mary O’Connor Bates. In addition, he is survived by five sisters, Beverly Ann Bates of St. Marys, Louella (Terry) DeBerry of Lumberport, Linda (Randy) Efaw of Mannington, Phyllis Charlene (Marty Hussman) of Wallace, and Janet Louise Stevens of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank his nephew, Jed H. Bates, for his special care over the past couple of years.
A memorial Mass, celebrated by the Rev. Robert Perriello, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter the Fisherman Church, Fairmont.
