Donald Wilbur Wilson Sr., 81, of Fairmont, passed away Monday (Dec. 3, 2012), surrounded by family at his home.
He was born Nov. 8, 1931, at the home of his parents, the late Guy E. and Virginia (Wright) Wilson, on Fort Hill, in the woods above Dakota in Marion County.
He worked for more than 35 years in the coal mines, having worked most of those years at Grant Town’s Federal No. 1 and, after its closure, later retiring from Federal No. 2. With a lifelong passion for both automobiles and fixing anything in need of repair, he not only worked his way from general mine laborer to maintenance foreman and master mechanic, he also worked for several auto body shops where he earned a reputation as one of the best automobile painters in the area.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and particularly enjoyed anything that involved spending time outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Irene (Arnold) Wilson; and his children, Donald W. Wilson Jr. and wife Cathy of Fairmont, Rick L. Wilson and wife Cindy of Morgantown, and Jinny S. Demastes and husband Robert of Charles Town.
Additionally, he is survived by grandchildren, Stephanie D. Kraynak, Christopher M. Wilson, Abbey E. Wilson, Molly J. Wilson and Lexi N. Demastes; and great-grandchildren, Jocelyn C. Kraynak, Emily G. Kraynak, Grant A. Wilson and Reynolds B. Wilson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Satterfield; and by infant grandchildren, Madonna Marie Wilson and Alex Jennings Wilson.
The family would like to thank Heather, Bridget and Jonathan, as well as other members of the staff of Amedisys for their kindness and assistance in recent days.
Friends will be received at Frey Home for Funerals, 320 Madison St., Fairmont, from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon Thursday to the time of the service at 1 p.m. with Pastor Adam Boyd officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.
