Gerald “Jerry” Lee Abel, 55, of Fairmont, passed away Saturday (Feb. 9, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a long, courageous battle with lung disease surrounded by his family and loved ones.
He was born in Fairmont on Aug. 22, 1957, a son of the late Harold A. Abel Sr. and Eska M. (Hyde) Abel.
Jerry worked for Helmick Corp. in the foundry and packing department for several years. He also had worked at the former Locust Avenue Car Wash, Allied/Fairmont Bowling Center and Fairmont State University.
He was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. He was a member of the NRA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, riding his Harley-Davidson, riding in local benefit poker runs and spending time with his loving family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Linda (Kemmler) Abel of Fairmont; two daughters, Rachel Abel and her fiancé Bruce Hardesty of Fairmont, and Chasidy Hardesty and her husband John of Fairmont; and two grandchildren, Jacob McDonald and Kallan Hardesty.
Also surviving are two sisters, Patricia Gay Winebarger of North Carolina, and Betty Sanders and her husband Dave of Fairmont; one brother, Harold Abel Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Pittsburgh; a brother-in-law, Frank Holt of Fairmont; several nieces and nephews; his best friend, Robert “Winko” Buege of Fairmont; and his faithful companion, his dog Winnie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeremie Lee Abel; one brother, Curtis Abel; one sister, Anna Holt; two brothers-in-law, Gene Schorle and Joe Winebarger; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Mary Ann Kemmler.
Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 4-8 p.m. today, from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Jim Zinn and the Rev. Bert Coffman officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Fairmont.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Jerry’s memory, as he was a cancer survivor, to the American Cancer Society, Marion Unit, 122 S. High St., Morgantown, WV; or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675; or to his family.
