Jesse ‘Toad’ Gump

Jesse Franklin “Toad” Gump, 90, of Joes Run, Mannington, passed away Sunday (Feb. 3, 2013) at his residence.

He was born Jan. 11, 1923 in Mannington, a son of the late Albert Gump and Aliza Dixon Gump.

He is survived by four children, James Gump and wife Peggy of Graff, Mo., Edward Gump and wife Doris of Mannington, Alice Gump of Mannington, and Ronald Gump and wife Tina of Mannington; a stepson, Edward Fetty of Joetown; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one half-sister, Ethel Varner of Fairmont; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ellen Villers Gump, who died in 2006; one great-grandson; four sisters, Ellen, Dory, Rosalee and Maxine; three brothers, Nick, Bob and J.R.; and one niece and one nephew.

Jesse was a heavy equipment operator for the West Virginia Division of Highways with 32 years of service. He was a “jack of all trades” and he enjoyed “widdling.”

Family and friends may call at Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St., Mannington, from 2:30-8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Joe Pat Elliott officiating. Burial will follow at Whetstone Cemetery.
