Mazie Batiste

Mazie Kathryn Batiste, 81, of Monongah, passed away Sunday (Jan. 6, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born in Richwood on Oct. 4, 1931, a daughter of the late Nellie Bowers Williams and stepdaughter of Sylvester Williams. She was raised in the Upper Glade and Cowen area.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clyde Joseph Batiste, in August 2004.

Mazie was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. She also liked working outside the home. She worked for several years at Hauge’s Greenhouse in Fairmont and many may remember her as the manager of the Film Box on Fairmont Avenue.

Her most recent job was caring for the elderly in their homes, the work that she most enjoyed. Mazie loved animals, gardening, movies, reading (especially Stephen King novels) and chocolate. She had a beautiful smile for everyone she met and a very giving heart. She will be greatly missed by her loving family.

Mazie is survived by her two sons, David Batiste and his wife Linda of Morgantown, and Steven Batiste and his wife Barbara of Florida; one daughter, Maria Marshall and her husband Richard of Fairmont; and four grandchildren, Lauren Adams and her husband Derek Overfield of Fairmont, Chelsey Adams and her husband Marcus Eilertsen of Edinburgh, Scotland, Rachel Batiste of Huntington and Ross Batiste of Florida.

Also surviving are a special sister, Frankie Short of Richwood; two brothers, James Williams and his wife Ruth of Richland, Mo., and Ralph Williams and his wife Sandy of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Vessie Williams and Roger Williams; and a sister, Nila Mealo.

In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, her body will be cremated and no public formal services will be held.

The family would like to thank the employees and staff of Mapleshire Nursing and Rehab Center for all their care and compassion for Mazie. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Marion County Humane Society, P.O. Box 905, Fairmont, WV 26554.

Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, has been entrusted with arrangements.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.carpenterandford.com.
