Anthony Iorio

Anthony Lawrence Iorio, 73, of Millersville community, Fairmont, passed away Sunday (March 3, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital, following a battle with brain cancer.

He was born Oct. 29, 1939 in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Emil and Santina Pignatelli Iorio.

Anthony, known to all as Tony, was a civil engineer by profession. He attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., and graduated from West Virginia University with a Board of Regents bachelor of arts degree. Tony particularly enjoyed the time he spent working for the Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, where, aboard the Hatton, he was part of a crew that surveyed the waters around New York City and Long Island.

Tony was an avid reader from a young age, when he frequented the New York City Public Libraries. He developed a broad knowledge of many subjects and often gifted books to friends. He enjoyed talking with friends and family, or with people he just met, always finding a way to connect with others. He was a jogger his entire adult life. He loved nature and the outdoors, taking his family camping, rafting or picnicking many times. He was Catholic by faith.

Tony is survived by his four sons, Paul of Morgantown, Lawrence of Morgantown, David of Fairmont, and John of Mountain View, Calif.; his four sisters, Marie Nappo of West Islip, N.Y., Emily Orlando of Rocky Hill, Conn., Regina Ceraulo of Long Island, N.Y., and Rosalie (Philip) Villafrate of Fort Myers, Fla.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Barbara Woessner of Ridge, N.Y., Raymond and Terry Spengler of Ridge, N.Y., and the Rev. Monsignor James Spengler of Rockaway Beach, N.Y.; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen Spengler Iorio, on Nov. 1, 1995; and two brothers-in-law, Arthur Nappo and Samuel Orlando.

The family wishes to thank the staffs at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and Mapleshire Nursing Home for all their care and support.

A viewing will be held at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, from noon to 9 p.m. Friday. A vigil service led by Sister Stella Cronauer, CSJ, will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A second viewing, the funeral Mass, and burial will take place next week in New York. Arrangements are being finalized at this time.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.rossfh.com.
