Merle “Jake” Daniel Glasscock, 70, of Mannington, passed away peacefully at home Saturday (March 2, 2013).
He was born Oct. 20, 1942 in South Worthington, a son of the late Daniel Johnson Glasscock and Thelma (Rinehart) Glasscock.
Jake is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Dorothy (Jones) Glasscock.
He worked for Consolidated Coal Co. of McElroy Mines in Moundsville.
Jake was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his family, he enjoyed working on vehicles, a freshly mowed yard, and sitting on the porch talking with family and neighbors.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: his sons and their wives, Kevin and Karen Glasscock of Mannington, and John and Sheila Glasscock of Mannington, and his daughter and her husband, Tammy and Dan Myers Jr. of Idamay; a godson and his wife, Joey and Bethany Slater; daughter, Barbara Morrison; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer and Kenneth Jones, Stephanie and Allen Ragland, Tonya Malnick, Nathan, Heather and Tiffany Glasscock, Sarah Glasscock, Joseph Slater, Megan Slater, Charity and Todd Rhoades, and Chastity and Charles Phillips; and seven great-grandchildren, Devony Jones, Kylee Jones, Josie Jones, Matt Beveridge, Alex Stibler, Aaron Stibler and Braden Nichols.
Also surviving are his brothers and their wives, Albert and Theresa Glasscock of Delaware and Florida, Gary and Ruth Glasscock of Pinegrove, and Jimmy and Cindy Glasscock of Folsom; his sister, Grace Oglesby of Mannington; Doris Stemler of Wisconsin; Patty Starkey and her husband Larry Starkey of Folsom; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Cheryl Morrison.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry “Buck” and Thelma (Floyd) Jones; and his brother-in-law, Jon Stemler.
Pallbearers will be Daniel “DJ” Glasscock, Jim Glasscock, Timmy Glasscock, Joey Slater, Donnie Jones, Dave Jones, Richard Jones, Matt Beveridge, Braden Nichols and Alex Stibler.
Honorary pallbearers are Devony Jones, Kylee Jones, Josie Jones, Chastity Phillips, Aaron Stibler, Nathan, Heather, Tiffany and Sarah Glasscock and Charity Rhoades.
The family would like to thank Dr. Govind Patel, Dr. Allapatt, Dr. Prasad Devabhakuni, Fairmont General Hospital, Hospice Care, Marion County Rescue Squad and Chief Brandon Riggs of Station 25 for caring for “Jake” during his illness.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Masters Funeral Home in Mannington. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Pastor Matthew Chapell officiating. Following the funeral services, he will be laid to rest at Huey Thorne Cemetery.
