Joann Findley

Joann Lou Findley, 84, longtime resident of Pleasant Valley Community, Fairmont, passed away peacefully Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2013) at her home with loving friends by her side.

She was born at the old Cook Hospital in Fairmont on Feb. 16, 1928, only child of the late Alston Gordon Findley and Mary Ida (Hayhurst) Findley.

Joann graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1946 and graduated from Fairmont State College in 1950 with a degree in elementary education with a minor in English and social studies. She began her teaching career in 1950, teaching fifth grade at East Park Elementary School for 35 years until her retirement in 1985. She was a charter member in 1961 of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Women Educators and was recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for 50 golden years to Alpha Delta Kappa in April 2011.

Having been a member of The Baptist Temple since 1945, in earlier years she had taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School and had been a member of the choir and of the Shafer Circle. She was an avid reader her entire life and had recently donated many of her cherished books to the Fairmont State University library. Even though Joann had no children of her own, she had been a positive influence on the lives of her former fifth-grade students.

She is survived by good friends, Bob Hahn and his sister Juanita, Beulah “Boots” Miller, and Brian and Maggie Clayton, all of Pleasant Valley, as well as many other friends and neighbors.

Miss Findley was an avid animal lover and is survived by her special canine companion, Lucy, who has been adopted by and lovingly cared for by the Eugene and Joyce McVicker family.

A special thanks is extended to Hospice Care Corp., including Marci, Jill, Vicky, Staci, Heather, Nicole and Pastor Matt for his comforting words.

Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 10-11 a.m. today. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. today. Interment will follow at Samuel Linn Cemetery in Benton’s Ferry.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.carpenterandford.com.
