Stanley L. Skarzinski

Stanley L. Skarzinski, 81, of Fairmont, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born in Monongah, on May 2, 1931, son of the late Chester and Josephine Skarzinski.

He retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of service. He served as the president of the Fairmont Postal Workers Union for 20 years, and former treasurer for the West Virginia Postal Workers for 10 years.

He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Watson and was a former president of the Holy Name Society, which he served three times at St. Anthony’s; he also cooked for funeral dinners at the church and also at the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Marian Council 942 Knights of Columbus, Marian Assembly 2114 Knights of Columbus fourth degree.

He also cooked for the Fairmont Soup Opera for more than 20 years. He was also a former member of the Trinkling Springs Hunting Club and was a former president of the Fairmont Eagles.

Early in his life he played the saxophone in the United Mine Workers band and played at the national convention in Cincinnati in 1960 and met John L. Lewis, John F. Kennedy and Doris Day.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Lou Hoskinson Skarzinski of Fairmont; one daughter, Mary K. Skarzinski of Fairmont; and one son and daughter-in-law, Stanley C. and Stephanie Skarzinski of Mannington. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Danielle Lenyee of Morgantown; one grandson, Devin Pourbaix of Fairmont; and he is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Remington and Shayleigh Pourbaix and Tyra Canfield, Chase Anderson and Miata Lenyee.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Chester Skarzinski Jr. at infancy, and one sister, Mary Marguerite Skarzinski.

Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, on Tuesday from noon-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Watson with Fr. Steve Joseph as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

The Knights of Columbus will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home followed by a vigil service.
