Owen Douglas Shaffer, 81, of Fairmont, passed away Sunday (Dec. 23, 2012) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born in Hammond on Dec. 30, 1930, a son of the late Cecil and Jemima Gay (Vincent) Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley Ruth (Robison) Shaffer, in November 1994.
Owen proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952-54 as a CPL in ordinance in the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. He began working at a saw mill for Bernard Satterfield and then worked at Owens-Illinois for 30 years. He then started his own business as owner and operator of Circle S Welding/Muffler Master. He was a 1948 graduate of East Fairmont High School. He was an avid sportsman, liking to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed farming, collecting and restoring old cars, participating in IH Scouts, and attending swap meets and flea markets.
Owen was a wonderful and loving husband and father.
He is survived by two sons, Dennis Lee Shaffer of Fairmont and Douglas Lynn Shaffer of Fairmont; his grandchildren, Jared Owen and Amanda Shaffer of Fairmont and Jamie Lynn Shaffer of Fairmont; and one great-grandson, Austin Uriah Shaffer.
Also surviving are two sisters, Pearl Perkins and Virginia Jackson, as well as several loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Howard, Clyde, Samuel and Virgil Shaffer; and two sisters, Gladys and Naomi.
Owen will be greatly missed by all his loved ones and all the friends and acquaintances he has made during his lifetime. The family would like to thank all of them for their support at this difficult time.
Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 5-8 p.m. today, from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10-11 a.m. Friday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Bob Barker officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.
