Thomas R. Ely, age 63, of Charlotte, N.C., died Sunday (Feb. 17, 2013) at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., of complications from his 13-year battle with cancer.
Thom was born June 2, 1949, in Fairmont. He spent his later years in Charlotte, N.C., with his companion and friend Dorothy Vick and their faithful Schnauzer, Frazier.
Thom is survived by his mother, Katherine, and his brother, Gary and his wife Cindy. He is also survived by his nephews Clint, Aaron and Jason Ely and their spouses as well as his nieces Megan, Sara and Kimi Ely. Others include his two great-nephews, Asher and Graham Ely. His father, Robert Ely, preceded Thom in death in 1994.
Thom was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and attended West Virginia University, where he earned a business degree. Thom retired from Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles, Calif., where he was the head of corporate accounting.
After a long career, Thom made Myrtle Beach, S.C., his home, where he pursued his passion for golf for several years. While Charlotte, N.C., was his last stay, Thom always enjoyed returning home to see family, friends and visit his favorite eateries. Thom was an avid sports fan especially watching his beloved Mountaineers and enjoyed photography, walking Frazier and NASCAR with his bro.
In keeping with Thom’s wishes, there will be no funeral services and his body will be cremated. Private services to follow at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made in Thom’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
