Carrie ‘Sue’ Stonestreet Kuhn

Sue Kuhn, of Gaithersburg, Md., died peacefully with family at her side Wednesday (June 27, 2012) at the Wilson Health Care Center, Asbury Methodist Village. She was 94 years old.

Sue was born Oct. 18, 1917 in Braxton County to the late Anna Susan Carroll and Letcher Shelton Stonestreet. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Paul W. Kuhn Sr. (1964); her brothers, Virgil Stonestreet and Russell Stonestreet; and sisters, Hazel Faust and Joan Lassiter.

One brother, Earl Stonestreet of Rootstown, Ohio, and four sisters, Opal Smith of Gassaway, Gladys Metz of Fairmont, Glenda Lemon of Smithsville, and Alma Boles of Ravenna, Ohio, survive.

Sue is survived by her daughter, Brenda K. Bickel of Alexandria, Va.; her son, Paul W. Kuhn Jr., and grandson, Bartlett Bickel, of Washington, D.C.; and granddaughter, Molly and husband Christopher Pearce, and great-granddaughter, Anna Pearce, and great-grandson, Benjamin Pearce, also of Alexandria, Va. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Mary McCoy of Gahanna, Ohio, and Elsie Stonestreet of Lincoln, Neb.; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Sue’s West Virginia roots ran deep and long. She spent her early years and most of her married life in Gassaway, Fairmont and Morgantown before residing briefly in Oklahoma. Her best memories were of growing up in the country in a large family that grows closer and stronger with the passing years. She would never miss the annual family reunion that has convened for the past 50 years and she always eagerly awaited the arrival of the family Round Robin letter, also continuing for more than 50 years.

Sue was a longtime member of Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., where she was instrumental in providing the residence for the Susanna Wesley House program for formerly homeless women. She reconnected with many members of the Foundry Family upon moving to Asbury Methodist Village, at which time she transferred to nearby Grace United Methodist Church. Among other involvements there, she was active with the group that volunteered at the Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen.

At Asbury, Sue also volunteered at the Bargain Mart, the Williamsburg Lane Clothes Closet and other causes she supported. She spoke often of enjoying the opportunities for learning, socializing and remaining physically active and engaged while a member of the Asbury community. A lifelong Democrat, Sue followed developments in domestic politics and international affairs closely.

Sue loved to travel and especially enjoyed the Passion Play at Oberammergau, visits to Israel, Egypt, Ireland, and a church-sponsored cruise to Alaska. In later years it was in her garden that Sue pursued her passion and found peace. She spent many hours there enjoying the diversion and was always generous in sharing the products of her labor with family and friends.

Sue’s professional life included a house mother position at Chi Omega sorority, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater; resident manager of Agnes Edwards House, University of Southwest Louisiana, Lafayette; and Laboure Hall resident manager at Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C., from which she retired as a Department Head after 15 years of employment.

At Sue’s request she has been cremated. There will be a memorial celebration of her life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Guild Memorial Chapel, 211 Russell Ave., at Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg, Md.

Donations in Sue’s memory may be sent to Montgomery Hospice, 1355 Piccard Drive, Rockville, MD 20850, or to the Arthritis Foundation, 4720 Montgomery Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814.
