John H. “Earl” Jones, 93, of Farmington, passed away with his family at his side on Monday (Aug. 27, 2012) at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 5, 1918 in Fairview, a son of the late Oscar Otis and Anna Gladys Ammons Jones.
Mr. Jones was married to Marjorie Hulme, who passed away Sept. 23, 2010. Theirs was a relationship that read like a storybook romance. They met during the brutality of war, and time and distance could not keep them apart. Marjorie came to the United States from England and they were wed on Feb. 1, 1947.
Earl was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army from Fort Hayes, Ohio, to Ireland, England, Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and finally Fort George Meade, Md. He was deployed with the 1st Armored Division, 6th Infantry. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and the European Theatre of Operations Ribbon.
He retired from Big John Salvage as a manager, was a blacksmith at Pricketts Fort, and was self employed as a welder and mechanic. He was a self-taught wood crafter, and was an overall talented man who always said, “If you can read it in a book, you can do anything you set your mind to.”
Pap is survived by his son, Glyn Jones and his wife Wanda of Farmington; a daughter, Marilyn Jones, with whom he made his home; four grandchildren, Melissa Ruckle and husband Craig of Mannington, James and April McClure of Meyersdale, Pa., David Jones and wife Barbie of Grafton, and Amanda Jones and fiancé Kevin Cayton of Fairmont; four great-grandchildren and one on the way, Daniel and Kenna McClure, Faith Offutt, Laila Ruckle and McKenzie Brooke Jones; nieces, Hazel Jean Dawson of Farmington, Joanny Martin and Kathie Jones of Ridgley; a nephew, Forrest Jones of Ridgley; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, David Arlington and Virgil Wayman Jones; and several aunts and uncles. He was the last surviving member of the Ammons family, and the next-to-last survivor of the Jones family.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice nurses Lisa Wade and Holly Wilson. He thought the world of you, and also Suzy Fluharty and Joyce Brown, our neighbors, who were always there, regardless of the day or hour. God bless you.
Friends may call at Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington from 9-11 a.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today with Pastors Chad Hutson and Larry Harker officiating. He will be laid to rest, along with his beloved wife, at the West Virginia National Cemetery at Pruntytown where full military graveside honors will be rendered.
Serving as pallbearers will be Glyn Jones, David Jones, James McClure, Kevin Cayton, Craig Ruckle and Dennis Carl.
