Carol Godby

Carol Jean Yost Godby, 78, of Fredericksburg, Va., went home to be with her Lord on Friday (March 1, 2013) at Carriage Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Dec. 23 1934, in Monongah. She grew up in Farmington and furthered her education by achieving a nursing degree.

Mrs. Godby was employed as a registered nurse, technical specifications reviewer for Trowbridge Steel Co., executive assistant to the vice president of sports marketing at Marriott World Headquarters and campaign manager for Sam Huff’s 1970 run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

She was active in the Sterling United Methodist Church in Sterling, having taught Sunday school and ministering to youth in the community. She was active in the creation/expansion of the Lower Loudoun Little League, Lower Loudoun boys’ football and Cub Scouts.

She and her husband were active grandparents and avid sports fans and travelled often to see their grandchildren participate in karate tournaments, soccer games, football games and dance recitals. She was an active participant in women’s tennis after being introduced to the sport at age 40. She loved spending time with family and friends, travelling, and watching West Virginia University football and basketball games. She also had a thirst for knowledge using the Internet for research and when no longer able to travel, kept in touch with family and friends on Facebook.

Survivors include her sons, Lt. Col. John Lawrence Godby (Cynthia) of Fredericksburg, Va., and James Lyle Godby (Lauren) of Potomac Falls, Va.; her four grandchildren, Jacob (Lauren) of California, Kyle (Meredith) of Virginia and Justin and Megan Godby of Virginia; one great-granddaughter, Makaela; two expected great-granddaughters; sister, Rebecca Yost of North Carolina; nephews, Mark Fortney (Pam) of Ohio, Alan Fortney (Janie) of Colorado; niece, Sherry Fortney Skinner (Dean) of Ohio; and eight grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, retired Marine Lt. Col. Lawrence J. Godby; her parents, John Felix Yost and Madge Houchin Yost; and a sister, Susan Jane Yost Calver.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, Va. Burial will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
