Donald McElroy

Donald Jennings McElroy, 64, of Fairmont, passed away Monday (Feb. 25, 2013) at Fairmont General Hospital after a long battle with illness.

He was born in Fairmont on March 4, 1948, a son Mary Frances (Hilgert) McElroy Travelute of Fairmont and the late Wilson Jennings McElroy.

Donnie proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart as well as other medals and ribbons for his bravery and courage. He was a self-employed master electrician and general contractor by trade. He was a one-of-a-kind father, grandfather and friend. After returning to Fairmont, he enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. His favorite pastime was playing the drums, hanging out and enjoying music with his family and friends.

In addition to his mother, he is survived and will be truly missed by his daughter, Dawn McCaulley and her husband Michael of Fairmont; and three beloved grandchildren, Brooke McCaulley, Tyler McCaulley and Evan McElroy, all of Fairmont.

Also surviving is a sister, JoAn McElroy Stemple; one brother, Rick McElroy and his wife Dorothy, all of Fairmont; David Uphold and Sharon Maxon of Fairmont; Eddy and Linda Cobb of Mannington; Terry Uphold of Virginia; and Cindy and Chad Vennis of Fairmont; 14 wonderful grandchildren, Dave Uphold, Heather Uphold, Daniel Uphold, Taylor Uphold, Summer McDonald, Valerie and Larry Heaster, Lori, Nova, Porsha, Beretta, Christian and William Cobb; close family friends, Benny and Shirley Hager; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his loving companion, Dorothy L. Uphold; a nephew, Donald Paul Erdie, who was named after Donnie; and the family pet companion, Boomer.

In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, his body will be cremated.

The family will receive friends at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.  A graveside service will be held at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown at 2 p.m. Friday with Pastor Benny Hager officiating.

Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.carpenterandford.com.
