Irene Layman

Irene Brock Layman, age 71, of Romney, beloved wife and partner of Walter H. Layman, died peacefully Wednesday (March 13, 2013) at Hampshire Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Irene was born on May 4, 1941, in Arnettsville, the daughter of the late Leslie Hogue and Kathleen Hawkins Brock.

Irene graduated from Morgantown High School, Class of 1959 and worked at Monongahela Power Co. in Fairmont. She worked in a variety of positions there until she met and married Walter Layman on Dec. 22, 1973. They made homes in Lanham and Gaithersburg, Md., and Romney. Having lived in Romney for the past 27 years, Irene felt fortunate to be part of a community with wonderful friends who expressed many acts of joy and compassion on her behalf.

Irene was admired and loved for her gentle demeanor and her steadfast kindness toward everyone she met. Those who knew her will remember the beauty of her blue eyes, warm smile and acts of caring. Irene will be deeply missed by her husband, sisters, her extended family of sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and the family’s three generations of children that she caringly watched grow.

Irene leaves a lasting legacy to her friends and family. She fought many illnesses over the years but did so with few complaints. She remained a beautifully groomed lady who loved nothing more than being at the side of her husband of more than 39 years. The Layman and Brock families will always be inspired by the enduring legacy of this marriage and partnership.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. Saturday until time of service at 11 a.m. at the Ford-DeGarmo Funeral Home in Rivesville.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ford-DeGarmo Funeral Home in Rivesville with the Rev. Stanley Merrifield officiating.

Interment will be at Arnettsville Cemetery, Arnettsville.

Memorials may be made to the HMH Extended Care Unit, Patient Services, 363 Sunrise Boulevard, Romney, WV 26757.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney.
