Nelma Frances Pitzer VanGilder, 93, of Fairmont, passed away Monday (Feb. 4, 2013) at Fairmont General Hospital.
She was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Barrackville, a daughter of the late Walter and Margaret O. Neptune Pitzer.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, J. Lee VanGilder, on Aug. 16, 1995.
Mrs. VanGilder was a 1938 graduate of Barrackville High School, as well as the Fairmont Business College. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fairmont.
Nelma had worked for Monongahela Power Co. in the Cleveland Avenue office at the contract desk and billing department for several years. She previously had worked with Guido Realty in Weirton for more than 15 years as the bookkeeper.
Nelma served as the church organist for Weirton First Baptist Church in Weirton for 23 years and later as the organist for Bethesda Baptist Church in Barrackville.
She enjoyed needlework, including cross stitching, tatting and crochet, as well as reading and visiting with her grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Don and his wife Sharon VanGilder of White Hall, with whom she made her home; and four grandchildren, Timothy VanGilder, Valery Morris, Heather Bolyard and Amber Miller
She had 10 living great-grandchildren, Hailey, Abigail and Akira VanGilder, Kaitlyn and Ryleigh Morris, Paige, Braden and Tyler Bolyard, and Briana and Cole Miller; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one great-grandson who passed away Jan. 9, 2013, Evan Richard Morris; as well as her sister, Retha Hamilton.
Friends and family may call Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, as well as from 10-11 a.m. Friday. The funeral will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Val Gittings officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum in Fairmont.
