Doris Shaffer

Doris Elaine Shaffer, a former resident of Fairmont born July 12, 1929, died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2013) at home in Bluefield.

She was the daughter of the late Hattie (Hicks) Thompson and Benjamin Thompson.

She resided with her husband of 63 years, Ted R. Shaffer, in Bluewell since 1945 and was a member of Bluewell United Methodist Church; retired from Mercer County Schools as a special education aide; was president of the Wednesday Morning Bowling League; and was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Shriner’s Ladies Auxiliary, the Bluewell Women’s Club and the OES.

She loved to skate, dance and was an avid WVU Mountaineer fan.

In addition to her husband, those left to cherish her memory are son, David Shaffer at home; daughter, Catherine (Shaffer) Clodfelter and special friend Jim Turner of Greensboro, N.J.; grandchildren, Beth Sapp and husband Chad of Kernersville, N.C., and Allen Cole and wife Amanda of Hopatcong, N.J.; great-grandchildren, Keaton, Ella Grace and Hutchins Sapp; brother, Knowlen Thompson and wife Virginia of Fairmont; and dear friend, Mary Catherine Urso of Fairmont.

Doris was a sister to the late Margie (Thompson) McCray/Strum, Wilma Edith (Thompson) Vangilder and James Lloyd Thompson; and an aunt to the late Arthur W. Vance and Laura Coulson, and to Charles M. Bunner, Deloris (Bunner) Suppa, Benjamin E. Bunner, Larry McCray, Patty (Thompson) Carriero, Debbie (Thompson) Stottlemire, and Kenney, Roger and Brian Thompson.

Her special caregiver was Aggie May of Bluewell.

Doris traveled to the State of California and back to West Virginia in a privately owned vehicle prior to 1935 with her mother and father, sister Margie and Wilma, along with her brothers, Knowlen and James and Howard Bunner. They returned with an Uncle Clifford Hicks.

Funeral services were conducted by Cravens-Shire Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan. 27, in Bluewell with the Rev. Stephen Rector officiating. Entombment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Princeton.
