John Fast

John Scott Fast, 79, of Monongah, passed away Thursday (March 7, 2013) at the Tygart Center at Fairmont Campus.

He was born in Fairmont on Sept. 26, 1933, a son of the late David V. and Audra Daisy (Dixon) Fast.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lovada (Collins) Fast, in October of 2008.

John proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy, where he served as a cook. He also served with the Navy Reserves in Fairmont and the Army Reserves, 445 Medical Unit, retiring as a sergeant. He was employed at Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in the packing department for 22 years until its closing and then went on to retire from Country Club Bakery. He also helped Mr. Raymond Joy with his car wash business.

Upon his retirement, John focused on taking care of his wife Ruby, the love of his life. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He had a great love of people and never met a stranger.

He was a loving husband, father and friend. He is survived by his two sons, John David Fast and his wife Brenda, and Jamie Lewis Fast and his wife Cheryl, who was also his loving caregiver, all of Monongah; and three grandchildren, Jimmy Knoble, Heather Marie Shriver and Whitney Nicole Fast.

Also surviving is a brother, David Fast and his wife Deloris of Boothsville.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Marie Fast; two brothers, Hugh Fast and Frank “Beaver” Fast; and four sisters, Mazie “Jackie” Fast Mundell, Kathleen Fast Gorden, Myrtle Leona Fast and Thelma Ruth Fast.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. and Monday from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 12:30 p.m. with Pastor Frank Cosco officiating. Interment will follow at West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown, where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
