Rev. Teresa Lee Hawkins-Cone, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Fairmont, was called home on Friday (June 29, 2012) at Cobb Hospital in Austell, Ga.
She was born March 16, 1945, in Fairmont, the daughter of the late Mary Alice Walter and Roosevelt Scarborough.
Teresa was reared in Fairmont by her grandparents, Oliver “Jimbo” and Mary Jo Walter. She gave her life to Christ at a young age and became a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Fairmont. She excelled in church activities during her tenure as a member and later became the musical director, musician and one of the lead vocalists of the Gospel Choir under the leadership of Pastors William Quarterman, Roy I. Austin, Willis M. Hickerson and Lee Wright.
Teresa was educated in the Marion County school system and received her bachelor of science degree in business administration from Fairmont State University in 1980.
Rev. Cone relocated to the Washington, D.C., area in the early 1980s. While there, she became a member of the New Samaritan Baptist Church and continued to lend her musical talents to different choirs as a director and musician.
She also had a career in the federal government. She embodied the leadership, organizational and professional skills needed to obtain, maintain and grow in the field of equal rights for all employees as an equal employment manager of the Department of the Army. She was affiliated with Toastmasters International, Inc. and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, receiving awards for outstanding service from the Federal Women’s Interagency Board and from the Federally Employed Women’s Inc. Later, she retired on disability in the mid 1990s and relocated to Atlanta, Ga. She then became a member of Zion Baptist Church of Marietta, Ga. under the leadership of Pastor Harris T. Travis.
In addition to her continued musical contributions, she received her Certificate of License to preach on Sept. 1, 1998 and Certificate of Ordination on April 16, 2000.
She is survived by her daughter, Shannon Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga.; her brother, Raye Walter of Sweden; her sister, Valerie Jackson and her husband Sye of Philadelphia, Pa.; her nephew, Steven Jackson, and her niece, Dionne Jackson, both of Philadelphia, Pa.
Friends may call Friday, July 6 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Following the viewing, a graveside service will be held at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the JG Lampkin Funeral Home.
