Margaret F. Decker

Born in Pittsburgh on April 20, 1907, a longtime resident of Fairmont, Mrs. Margaret F. Decker passed away peacefully at the age of 105 on Sunday (Dec. 2, 2012).

Mrs. Decker graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor of arts degree in education. She later went on to teach English and was a librarian in the Marion County school system for the majority of her career. Upon retirement, she traveled extensively throughout Europe with a retired teachers’ organization.

A woman of great faith, Mrs. Decker was an active and devoted member of First Presbyterian Church in Fairmont, for which she taught summer Vacation Bible School.

Mrs. Decker was a member of Morning Gardeners Garden Club. A passionate admirer of nature and all animals, Mrs. Decker devoted her time to nature conservancy and education that included teaching programs about butterflies and birds to local schools, organizations and neighbors on Farms Drive and Boyd Park.

As a testament to the great attention to which she paid the environment, Mrs. Decker’s backyard was recognized by the National Audubon Society as a Wildlife Bird Sanctuary.

Friends and family will remember her best by her kind smile, accepting heart, sense of humor, love of Mountaineer and Steelers football, and as a champion for a simplistic life filed with laughter, love and nature.

Mrs. Decker is survived by her daughter, Nancy Decker-Siefken; son-in-law, Leon Siefken; grandson, Christopher Gracy; and neighbors and friends.

Friends and family will be received for a funeral service on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Fairmont with Rev. Elise Neal officiating. Interment will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Fairmont. The family requests that memorial donations be made in Mrs. Decker’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church, 301 Jackson St., Fairmont, WV 26554.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel in Fairmont. Online condolences may be made at www.fordfuneralhomes.com.
