Margaret “Peggy” Garrett, 77, of Pleasant Valley (Millersville Community), passed away Monday (Feb. 11, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.  

She was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Ernest C. and Genevieve O’Connor Shafferman.  

She was an active member of the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church in Pleasant Valley, where she was a Sunday school teacher of the Seekers Class.  

Mrs. Garrett was a 1953 graduate of East Fairmont High School and also attended the Philadelphia School of Medical Technologists. She continued her education at Fairmont State College and in 1994 earned a Board of Regents degree at the age of 59, graduating along with her son Dave.

Peggy worked at the Fairmont Emergency Hospital and later for Fairmont General Hospital, where she was a lab supervisor and retired in 2001. She truly loved her work and her coworkers.  

Peggy was the maker of many afghans which were made for nearly all family members, fellow workers and their children, church members and their children, and as gifts for various organizations. Her last afghan will go to The East Fairmont High School Class of 1953.

Peggy was the Millersville district councilwoman since the creation of the city of Pleasant Valley. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, AMT, Valley Chapel UMC, Marion County VB, and the Hand and Foot Card Club. Peggy loved to travel and had visited Australia, Ireland, Scotland, England, Mexico and many United States cities.

Peggy was the mother of one daughter, Cathy Ann Morrison and her husband R.D. of Fairmont; three sons, Mike Garrett and his wife Sue of Fairmont, Jimmie Garrett and his wife Mindy of Pickerington, Ohio, and David Garrett and his wife Melissa of Fairmont. She was the grandmother of nine, Michael Garrett, Jaime Morrison, Jennifer Morrison, Joshua (Doc) Garrett, Matthew Morrison, Connor Garrett, Morgan Garrett, Evan Garrett and Madison Garrett; and great-grandmother to Graci Garrett, Waylon Garrett and Ryleigh Tennant.

She also is survived by close family members, Pauline Wright and Martha Shafferman, and her loving dog, Maggie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Shafferman, who also fought the battle with multiple myeloma.

Memorial contributions may be made in Peggy’s honor to the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, 1511 Pleasant Valley Road, Pleasant Valley.

Serving as pallbearers for Peggy will be Michael Garrett, Joshua Garrett, Matt Morrison, Connor Garrett, Evan Garrett  and Chuck Villers. Waylon Garrett will serve as an honorary pallbearer.  

Friends and family may visit the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Garrett will lie in state at the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, 1511 Pleasant Valley Road, Pleasant Valley, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The funeral service will be in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Andrew Tennant officiating. Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.
