Robert Reed

Robert Allen Reed, director of Exploratory Systems Laboratory, Bell Telephone Laboratories, died peacefully in his home from colon cancer Saturday (Jan. 26, 2013).

Robert was born Nov. 19, 1932, in Hutchinson to Harry V. and Nelle S. Reed, and raised in Fairmont.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and, afterward, attended West Virginia University. He graduated from WVU with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and later earned a master’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology. During a 25-plus year career at Bell Laboratories, he worked on many significant projects, including the Safeguard Program (missile defense); development of MASERs; creation of the first 32-bit microprocessor; and the communications network for the 1984 Summer Olympics. His work at Bell Labs took him (and his family) to many places, including New Jersey, the Marshall Islands, North Dakota and Illinois. He “retired” to Raleigh, N.C., where he worked for ITT Telecom before starting his own telecommunications business (Raleigh Technology Group). After retiring (again), he moved to Ocala, Fla., in 2000.

Robert enjoyed sports (especially golf). He was active with Stephen’s Ministries and in United Marriage Encounters. He was an enthusiastic learner and problem solver, inspiring those he worked with to strive for excellence. But above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He and his wife, Anita, were married for 57 years and together they were blessed with a family that included four children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Anita; sister, Willa Jean French; children, Carol Trentlage, Daniel (Marcia), Elaine (Richard Neill) and Frederick (Judith-Ann); 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 4, at Countryside Presbyterian Church in Ocala, followed by interment at 12:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of Marion County, Ocala, Fla.
