Marianne Mathias Newbrough

Marianne Mathias Newbrough, 84, of Fairmont, passed away Thursday (July 5, 2012) at Genesis Fairmont Campus, Tygart Center.

She was born Dec. 16, 1927 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Jesse and Mary Elizabeth Irwin Mathias.

She is survived by her husband, Don M. Newbrough Jr.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a stepson, Tim M. Newbrough and his wife Suzanne; grandchildren, Weston Newbrough, Evan Newbrough and Jeffrey Newbrough; and nieces, Sharon Spencer and her husband Don, Marsha Loewenson and her husband Dan, Carol Meyer Brown and her husband Mitchell, and Sue Sanchez.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her older sister, Jean Riekofski and her husband Robert Riekofski. She also was preceded in death by her toy collie, Tammy.

Mrs. Newbrough was baptized a Christian on April 1, 1928 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Women’s Faith Guild at Grace Lutheran and was proud to be a lifetime member of the church. She was a graduate of both East Fairmont High School and the Grace Martin’s Secretarial Course in Pittsburgh. She spent her entire life in Fairmont and while she was in high school she worked at Hartley’s Department Store. She began working at Westinghouse in 1946 and retired from North American Philips with more than 43 years of service as secretary to the plant manager.

Mrs. Newbrough was a member and former treasurer of the Theta Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi social sorority, which was a social, cultural, educational and community-oriented sorority — “the friendship organization.” She enjoyed bowling up until the age of 82, with her best game surpassing the 200 mark. She was also a member of the West Virginia Travel Club and she particularly enjoyed her vacations to the Holy Land and to Alaska. In her retirement, she and her husband volunteered for Meals on Wheels and she was truly concerned for the well-being of others.
