Luvania “Bonnie” Carpenter, 91, of Pleasant Valley, died Saturday (July 7, 2012) at her residence. Family and friends were at her side.
She was born March 9, 1921 on Miracle Run (Monongalia County), the daughter of the late Harley Leslie and Nora Jane (Eddy) Gump. She was married to Oscar Olen Carpenter for 64-plus years. He died in 2002.
Luvania was preceded in death by her parents, 12 of her 13 brothers and sisters, her husband, and her oldest son, Jerry Lee, who died of diabetic complications in 1983.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sandy Carpenter of Morgantown. She is also survived by a sister, Ellen Booth of Youngstown, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Mamie Joliffe of Fairmont; and a brother-in-law, Columbus “Bud” Orie Carpenter of Fairmont.
Luvania had six grandchildren, Scottie Lee of Phoenix, Ariz., Kimberly Rae of Meadville, Pa., Jerry Lee and his wife Jo Ellen of Charleston, Todd Jason and his wife Amie of Pittsburgh, Pa., Kristin Leigh Savage and her husband Jeffrey of Morgantown, and Keira Leanne McCabe and her husband Christopher of Morgantown.
She was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren, Stephanie Danielle and Colby Olen Carpenter of Meadville; Travis Lee Carpenter of Toledo; Alyssa Marie, Ty Mason and Cassandra “Cassie” Eve Carpenter of Pittsburgh; Brady Keith, Chase Jeffrey and Beau Alexander Savage of Morgantown; and Maddox Evan and Manning Lee McCabe of Morgantown.
Luvania was a member of Valley Chapel United Methodist Church.
She had strong family ties with her 13 brothers and sisters and she was a devoted mother to her two sons. During World War II she worked at the Owens-Illinois Bottling Plant and from 1955-75 she and her husband worked and/or co-owned/managed several movie theaters in the towns of Fairmont, Morgantown, Mannington and Hundred.
She was very supportive and would often be seen with her husband at Democratic political functions, the Pleasant Valley PTA meetings during the ’60s, Lions Club activities, Veterans of Foreign Wars gatherings, Marion County Planning Commission events, Marion County Parks and Recreation activities, organizational meetings for the Kingmill Public Service District and efforts to incorporate the City of Pleasant Valley.
Pastors Sheila and Scott Hill were simply “angels on Earth” during the past several years to provide primary care for Bonnie. And most recently Bonnie was very blessed with special “angels” who helped in her care, specifically Jackie Stiles and Linda Alvero. Over the years other “angels” have helped, including Gerry Freeland, Casey Grandstaff, Amanda Mundell, Amanda Channel and David Dodd.
Family and friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 3-8 p.m. Monday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Service will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Sheila Hill presiding. Interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Morgantown. After services at Beverly Hills, a reception will be held in Morgantown at the home of her son.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions can be made to the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, 8 Medical Center Drive, Morgantown, WV 26505-3409 (a WVU Institute dedicated to the study of both memory and memory disorders).
