Dolores Jean Gaskin

Dolores Jean Gaskin, 79, of Fairmont, passed away Saturday (July 14, 2012) in her home.

She was born March 10, 1933 in Fairmont, daughter of the late John and Evelyn (Vicchiarelli) Lobuts.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, the late Vaughn William Gaskin Jr., who passed away Oct. 16, 2009. They were married Aug. 23, 1958.

Dolores graduated from Fairmont Senior High School, Fairmont State College and West Virginia University. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Chi Sorority at Fairmont State. She received a master’s in guidance and counseling and administration from WVU.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She also enjoyed all the students she taught through the years. She taught 34 years in Marion County and one year in Alexandria, Va. She taught home economics to seventh-grade students in Alexandria. In Marion County she taught home economics, Title 1 math, and was a teaching principal to grades 4 through 6 at Benton’s Ferry before its closing. She was a guidance counselor at Fairmont Senior High before starting her family. She returned to teaching in Title 1 math, then as a counselor at Barrackville Elementary, Middle School, Fairview Middle School, East Park Elementary, Middle, and East Fairmont Junior High school, from which she retired in June 1999. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Fairmont, and a past member of NEA, WVEA, MCEA, Isis Court No. 1 and the Woman’s Club of Fairmont.

Dolores is survived by two sons, Bruce T. Gaskin of Fairmont, and David E. Gaskin and wife Carole Dionne Gaskin of New Philadelphia, Ohio; three grandsons, Tyler Cox and Alex and Kobe Gaskin of New Philadelphia, Ohio; one brother, Dr. John Lobuts Jr. and wife Irene of Rockville, Md., and their children, Brian and wife Tracy, Lee Ann Layden and husband William, and John III; one sister, Mary Ann Coceano and husband Leo of Medford, N.J., and their son, Barry and wife Dawn of Vienna, Va.; and great-nephews and -nieces, Brook and Paige Lobuts, William, Mathew and Nicholas Layden, and Samantha and Elizabeth Coceano.

Friends and family may call at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. in Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. Sunday. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hal Hevener officiating. Burial will follow at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
