Doris Carpenter

Doris Elizabeth (Towles) Carpenter, 89, of Fairmont, passed away comfortably and peacefully Saturday (Oct. 20, 2012) at her home after a short homebound illness, with her children by her side, and went to be with the Lord and family in heaven.

She was born in Owings on Nov. 24, 1922, a daughter of the late Emory Amos and Lelia Pearl (McIntire) Towles.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Donald Wayward “D.W.” Carpenter, in March 2009.

Doris was retired from Owens-Illinois Glass Plant with 35 years of service. She was a homemaker in her later years.

Doris very much loved her children and was very active with them before her illness. She loved to travel and enjoyed taking bus trips and a Bahama cruise. She also enjoyed cooking, puzzles, attending church and reading the Bible.

Her favorite cruise pastime was sitting on her front porch visiting with friends and family.

She is survived by one son, Ronald G. Carpenter and his wife Marilyn of Fairmont; two daughters, Donna L. Carpenter-Cooper and her husband Craig of Waitsfield, Vt., and Ronna Faye Carpenter of Fairmont; three grandchildren, Matt Carpenter, Kim Carpenter-Conley and Stephanie Carpenter; and five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ryan and Jessica Conley and Reese and Tate Carpenter.

Also surviving are two brothers, Emory “Bud” Towles and his wife Ruth, and George Towles and his wife Doris; and several loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lee Towles; four sisters, Ester Sellers, Eura Reese, Lenora “Sis” McCauley and Eloise Hayhurst; in-laws, Wayward and Reva Austin-Carpenter; a brother-in-law, Charles Carpenter; and a sister-in-law, Neva Faye Carpenter.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. today, and from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Viola Church. The funeral service will be held at Viola Church, Pricketts Fort Road, Fairmont, at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Scott Krepps officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.

The family would like to thank Hospice Care for their sincere and loving care that was provided to Doris throughout her illness.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care, 1406 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554; or Meals on Wheels of Marion County, 1042 Fairfax St., Fairmont, WV 26554.
