Melba Bissell

Melba Lorene Bissell, 87, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Wednesday (Feb. 8, 2012).

She was born Jan. 2, 1925 in Pine Bluff to the late Harlan and Maude Haggerty.

She is survived by her six children, Ted Bissell of East Hollywood, Calif., Jeff Bissell and wife Pat of Stow, Ohio, Craig Bissell and wife Kakki of Tallahassee, Mary Hogue and husband Bobby of Jacksonville, Marc Bissell and wife Heather of Surprise, Ariz., and Cindy Bissell of Kent, Ohio. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy (Haggerty) Martin of Seattle; brother, Terry Haggerty and wife Sandra of Wyatt; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Dr. L. Fred Bissell; great-grandson, Jude Jeffery; brother-in-law, Gordon Martin; and son-in-law, George Murray.

Melba graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1941 from Monongah High School and entered the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. While serving in the Navy, she graduated from The Baltimore College for Women as an RN. She cared for others as a nurse for more than 50 years. She was a member of Avondale United Methodist Church, the Jacksonville Women’s Club and the Jacksonville Garden Club. She also sang with the Friday Musicale. She was a member of the Jacksonville Retired Navy Nurse group.

A memorial service was held Feb. 24 at Avondale United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. The service was led by her grandson, the Rev. Curtis Bissell of Brimfield, Ohio. Cremation services were handled by Eternity Funeral Home and Crematory of Jacksonville.

A local memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shinnston First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Toni Beecher presiding. Cremains will be interred following the service at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
