Sonya S. Kearney, 68, of Ashton, Md., formerly from Fairmont, passed away on Dec. 26, 2012.
She was the daughter of William Edward Hughes and Vera Moran Hughes.
Sonya was educated in the Marion County school system, graduating from East Fairmont High School in 1962. Sonya won a four-year scholarship to Fairmont State College, where she studied elementary education. She graduated with honors in 1966.
Sonya belonged to the Gamma Chi Chi sorority and returned home for numerous reunions.
Sonya taught two years in Marion, Ohio, then moved to Maryland, where she taught in the Montgomery County School System for 36 years. In Maryland, she met her loving husband James Kearney; they celebrated 40 years of marriage in the summer of 2012.
When Sonya passed away, she was surrounded by good friends whom she had met along the way in her journey of life.
Sonya is survived by her husband, James Kearney of Ashton, Md,; her mother, Vera M. Hughes. and brother, Edgar L. Moran, both from Fairmont. In addition, she is survived by several cousins and close friends, Penny Flecker, Jackie Daye, Arleen Shadoan and Bobbi Mohrman to name a few.
A memorial Mass was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rockville, Md., on Jan. 3, 2013.
Interment will be at Pisgah Cemetery in Smithtown at a later date.
